[Product introduction]
1/72 scale plastic model.

The F/A-18 Hornet is a carrier-based fighter and attack aircraft of the United States Navy and Marine Corps developed as a successor to the F-4 Phantom and A-7 Corsair carrier-based attack aircraft.

In 1974 the United States Navy announced a plan to develop the next generation of carrier-based fighter and attack aircraft.

The candidates were General Dynamics' YF-16 and Northrop's YF-17 light fighter.
The US Navy required the aircraft to be equipped with semi-active radar-guided AAM Sparrows and to introduce a fire control system to operate them as well as various maintenance to operate the aircraft carrier.
As a result of the review it was decided to carry out a major redesign based on the large twin-engine YF-17 and McDonnell Douglas was selected as the prime contractor for development.
The first aircraft was completed on September 13 1978 and successfully made its first flight in November of the same year.
Unlike previous fighter aircraft the F/A-18 can perform both fighter and attack roles with a single model.
As a result the US Navy established the Fighter Flying Attack Squadron (VFA)
which combined the missions of a fighter squadron and an attack squadron and the Marine Corps operates the aircraft in the VMFA as a successor to the Phantom.
The A-type was the first mass-produced model and the B-type is a two-seat trainer model with an additional rear seat without extending the fuselage.
The C-type is an advanced version of the A-type and the D-type is an advanced version of the B-type with improved night attack capabilities in particular.

The F/A-18 Hornet is used by many foreign countries including Australia and Canada in addition to the US Navy and Marine Corps.
