In 1972, Celica continued to make good progress and won the touring car class at the All Japan Suzuka Auto Race in March. In April of the same year, at the Race de Nippon held in Fuji, he demonstrated the potential to hold the top position by winning the overall victory over the Skyrun GT-R and Fairlady 240Z. At the Japanese Grand Prix held in Fuji on May 3, Celica almost monopolized the top ranks of 1st, 2nd and 4th, and Corolla Levin also entered 3rd, showing Toyota's overwhelming strength.
