It was primarily used to transport paper products and motorcycles, but due to a decline in freight traffic and the replacement of freight with containers, all cars were retired from freight transport in the late 1990s. From the late 1980s, some of the cars had their interior shelves removed, and became the 30000 series, which were used primarily to transport paper products from Hokkaido, and some were also used to transport chemical products.
