[Introduction to the actual vehicle] The Kumoha 40 series is a double-cab electric train that appeared in 1932, and was the first 20m-class electric vehicle of the Ministry of Railways. When it first appeared, it was used on the Chuo Line, Yamanote Line, Joban Line, and Joto Line (part of the current Osaka Loop Line). After the war, many of them were converted to single-cab or intermediate cars, but the cars that remained with double cabs were used for adding cars to trains in the metropolitan area, such as the Chuo and Sobu lines, and some were further transferred to local lines such as the Toyamako Line, Oito Line, Ube Line, and Onoda Line. The Ome Line used old national electric trains until 1978, but along with the 72 and 73 series, it was used until the end. The Moha 40 series was in service. In the 1960s, the old national railways on the Ome Line mainly consisted of two-car formations (KuMoHa + KuHa) or two coupled formations. However, from around 1972, Moha 72 and Saha 78 were introduced, and since then, the four-car formations (KuMoHa 73 + SaHa 78 + Moha 72 + KuHa 79) have become the norm.
