Kim Gordon, a music history icon who needs no introduction, has released her third solo album, "PLAY ME," on Matador Records. Kim Gordon's 2019 solo debut, "No Home Record," demonstrated her continued sonic sensibility. Incorporating elements of avant-rap and footwork, the album reimagined as sonic conceptual art, vividly showcased her current state of being. Her follow-up, "The Collective," released in 2024, was even heavier and bolder, earning two Grammy nominations, led by "BYE BYE," a track dominated by an industrial roar that blends packing lists with angry rap. The swiftly delivered "PLAY ME" tackles the "collateral damage" of the billionaire class in her signature style. Its dark humor speaks to the absurdities of modern society—the dismantling of democracy, the stifling control systems that result from a society where technology and experts decide everything, and the sense of culture being leveled by AI's mass-produced "comfortable atmosphere." Yet despite its often outward-looking gaze, "PLAY ME" is also at its heart an introspective album. Heightened emotional amplitude pulsates within its physical jams, refusing to assert a definitive message. Driven by a questioning attitude, it remains constantly evolving, never remaining complete. "PLAY ME" is a sharp, immediate work, expanding Kim Gordon's sonic palette toward more melodic beats and the mechanical thrust of krautrock. Of her ongoing collaboration with Los Angeles producer Justin Leisen (Charli XCX, Sky Ferreira, Yves Tumor), Kim Gordon says, "I wanted the songs to be short. I wanted it to be fast. It's more focused, and probably more confident than my last album. I've always been a rhythm-driven person, and I wanted this to be more beat-driven than my last. Justin really understands my voice and my lyrics and how I work, and I think that comes through even more on this album." Amid the endlessly excavating collages, pitch-shifted vocals, and disturbing layers of dissonance that underlie PLAY ME, her songs remain explicitly attentive to a world that seeks to paralyze us with distractions. "Honestly, the news was my biggest influence," she says. "We're in a kind of post-imperial era, where people just disappear." This statement also echoes the title of one of the songs on "PLAY ME."
