Based on Yasuhiko Takiguchi's novel Ibun Roninki (Ibun Roninki), the soundtrack to "Ichimei," director Takashi Miike's remake of the 1962 film "Seppuku," expresses a melancholic theme of poverty and the conflict between honor and the samurai. The main theme is performed on a variety of instruments, including strings, piano, and oboe, casting different shadows in each scene, and variations on the composition add depth to the music. Many tracks, such as the taut strings in "Harakiri," played during the seppuku scene, and the desperate high notes of the violin in the following "No Way Out," add a sense of urgency to the scene. The dissonant piano notes, thrown in with a touch of sound design, feel more like skill than arrangement. As befits a period drama, this work also makes effective use of traditional Japanese instruments. In "God of Death," the taiko drumming by the Sankyokai ensemble resonates like both a sound effect and a modern kick drum, enhancing the atmosphere. The sound of Tamami Higashino's sho on "Losing" is also impressive. Meanwhile, there are tracks featuring Kaori Muraji's acoustic guitar, whose beautiful tone contrasts with the traditional Japanese instruments. Among the tracks peppered with a variety of sounds, "In the Courtyard" is particularly stunning. The ambient synth backdrop, interwoven with noise-laden percussion and shakuhachi-like flute sounds, creates a stunning atmosphere. This album, colored by refined music without overly inflating the heavy narrative, truly showcases the artist's skilled technique. Released and Distributed by: Provided Materials (2025
