The Lockheed S-3A Viking was the world's first carrier-based jet anti-submarine patrol aircraft, adopted by the U.
S.
Navy as the successor to the Grumman S-2 Tracker.
The S-3A is equipped with the latest anti-submarine detection equipment, including the APS-116 radar, infrared detection system, retractable magnetic detection system, active sonar system, and ECM equipment.
The fuselage bomb bay can carry four homing torpedoes or depth charges, and underwing pylons can carry a variety of offensive weapons, including bombs, rockets, and flares.
Additionally, an extendable airborne refueling probe is mounted above the cockpit, and the wings and vertical stabilizer are hydraulically foldable.
It entered combat service in 1975 and has been deployed to 12 squadrons.
Derivatives of the S-3A include the US-3A, modified for use as a carrier-to-base liaison transport, and the improved S-3B, capable of operating the AGM-84 Harpoon missile.
