The Lancer Evolution IX MR was the final model of the CT9A type, the third generation of the Lancer Evolution series that began with the Lancer Evolution VII, which debuted in 2001.

The Evolution IX MR, released in 2006, was also the final model to feature the renowned '4G63' engine, which had been used for many years.

The "MR" designation is a high-performance model name inherited from the classic Galant GTO, and was first adopted for the Lancer Evolution with the Evolution VIII MR in 2004.

The Evolution IX MR boasts numerous improvements in feel, including a more refined turbocharger and increased capacity for the Active Yaw Control (AYC),
making it a culmination of all previous Lancer Evolution models.
