The KiHa 08 series is a diesel railcar converted from a passenger car with driver's cabs at both ends. The JNR KiHa 08 series was converted from the Oha 62 series in 1960. Initially, it was called the KiHa 40 series (first generation), but it was renamed the KiHa 08 series in 1966. In addition to the KiHa 08 series with driver's cabs at both ends, a total of 14 cars were produced in the same series, including the KiHa 45 series (later the KiHa 09 series) with a driver's cab at one end, and the KiKuHa 45 series and KiSaHa 45 series which were used as control cars and trailer cars.
