The X80 series, the sixth generation of the Mark II, was a car that hinted at becoming a classic, and it debuted in August 1988 as a complete redesign of the previous X70 series.
While the exterior design maintained the concept of its predecessor, it evolved into an even more stylish design with a curved surface base to match the trends of the time.
From this generation onwards, all models equipped with a 6-cylinder engine became DOHC 24-valve, and the front suspension adopted a strut type, while the rear adopted a double wishbone type.
Riding the wave of the booming bubble economy, the Mark II became such a hit that in 1990 it surpassed the Corolla in annual sales figures, becoming the top-selling car for the first time in its history.
