[Actual vehicle introduction] In 1988, in conjunction with the opening of the Seikan Tunnel connecting Honshu and Hokkaido, the sleeper express "Hokutosei" began operating between Ueno and Sapporo. This luxury sleeper express train offered deluxe-oriented service and was well-received. This product is a mixed train consisting of carriages belonging to JR Hokkaido and JR East that was introduced in 2008. Cars 1-6, including the lobby and private B-class sleeping compartments, are JR Hokkaido cars, while cars 7-11, centered around the dining car (Grand Chariot) and private A-class sleeping compartments, as well as the power supply car, are JR East cars. While it continued to operate as one of the few overnight sleeper express trains, regular service ended in March 2015 due to preparations for the opening of the Hokkaido Shinkansen. It was subsequently re-run as a special train and continued to operate until August of the same year. This is a reproduction of the popular 24 Series Sleeper Express "Hokutosei," the last remaining Blue Train in service.
