The recording numbers are "301", "302", "303", "304", and the maker's plate is reproduced in silver letters.

The EF81 300 series, developed for the Kanmon Tunnel connecting Honshu and Kyushu, features a stainless steel body with a unique corrugated exterior.
Of these, No. 301 and No. 302 were painted rose pink (red No. 13), the same color as other general cars, when they were transferred from the Moji locomotive depot to the Uchigo locomotive depot due to the timetable revision in October 1978.
