[Set Contents] Kiha 40-1775 (M), Kiha 40-1745 (T), Kiha 40-1722 (M), Kiha 40-1744 (T) [Actual Vehicle Introduction] The Kiha 40 series is a general-purpose diesel car developed to replace the aging Kiha 10 series, and was introduced in 1977. Various models and series were manufactured, including single-cab and double-cab versions for cold and warm climates, and with or without toilets. A total of 888 cars were manufactured, and they were used mainly on non-electrified lines throughout the country. In Hokkaido, where winters are harsh, the Kiha 40 series 100s are deployed with both driver's cabs, while the single-cab Kiha 48 series, the 300s with toilets and the 1300s without, are deployed. The small side windows are double-glazed, making them suitable for extremely cold regions. The Kiha 40 series 100s were converted to one-man operation and became the 700s, and their exterior, which was previously only vermilion, was changed to a refreshing light gray with green and blue stripes. The 700s were subsequently given life extension work, including engine replacement and the relocation of the rooftop water tank inside the car, and the construction vehicles were upgraded to the 1700s, a number that exceeds the 1000s. Even after the Nemuro Main Line Furano-Shintoku section is closed in 2024, Kiha 40 series locomotives will continue to operate on the Takikawa side, delighting fans with their seasonal appearances along the line. However, with the timetable revision the following year, they will be replaced by Kiha 54 series 500s, and on March 14th, the day before the timetable revision, they sadly put an end to their service on the Nemuro Main Line.
On March 14th, the day before the timetable revision, the Kiha 40 series locomotives operated between Takikawa and Furano on the Nemuro Main Line. All four 1700 series cars belonged to Kushiro, and No. 1722, which has a sign on the two-end side of the connecting door, was leaving the series of operations that day and also entered service, serving as the final train to Furano. No. 1744, which belongs to Asahikawa and has a roof whistle on the right, arrived at Furano around 7 p.m., and after completing its operation, was stored at Furano with No. 1722 and sent back the next day. No. 1745, also belonging to Asahikawa, headed to Takikawa with No. 1722 early in the morning, took a nap in Takikawa, and then made two round trips from the evening, becoming the final train departing from Furano. The original No. 1775, belonging to the route, was a later model with a different skirt shape. On this day, it was scheduled to make 3.5 round trips, but ended its operation at Takikawa on the third round trip.
